Trip to Norway
Hi guys :)
Finally having a chance to sit down and recap my 5 1/2 day trip to Norway. It was the best trip so far and I'm so grateful to have had the opportunity to go back and appreciate my family and Norwegian heritage :)
I flew into Oslo on Tuesday night and was greeted at the airport by Linda, Andrea and Emilie. We drove home to their adorable house in Ytre Enebakk, where Hovard and Filip were up waiting to say hi. The kids were a little shy at first, but quickly warmed up and started talking to me. Their english is P H E N O M E N A L !!! Not only that, but they're working on their Spanish too, and it's easily better than mine.
On Wednesday afternoon, Linda dropped the kids and me off in Oslo, where we spent the day walking around the city. It was weird because I only remembered bits and pieces of the city, it's strange how our memory only remembers certain details from our past (like how I didn't remember the Opera House, but remembered a red play structure next to the boat dock??). After the Oslo tour, we drove to Moss for family dinner with Tom, Carina and Lars. Before going inside, I ran down to the water and stood on the dock and just took in how lucky I was to be standing there. We had fresh salmon and vegetables for dinner, and my heart was SO full being surrounded by my family. It was great to catch up with both Tom and Carina, since I haven't seen them since I was 10 years old.
Thursday afternoon Linda and the kids and I went up to their new cabin in Trysil, which is a ski resort town in the north eastern part of Norway. We made s'mores before dinner, to make sure that we could do it before it started snowing. We cooked up fresh cod for dinner and had ourselves a little movie night with some delicious Norwegian chocolate. One thing I remembered from my last trip here was this candy called Daim that I absolutely loved. They now have it in a chocolate bar, and I easily could've eaten the whole bar in one sitting-- it's so freaking good :)
Friday morning we woke up and planned on hitting the slopes, but "this weather is shit!" said Linda, so we had another chill day instead. We went into town and walked around for a bit, Linda bought a new reindeer pelt rug for the cabin. The man selling the pelt was this crazy Swedish farmer guy who had the fur hat on and knives and giant teeth hanging off of his belt. Made me laugh to think that people like him actually exist still lol. We did 'make your own' pizza for dinner and had another quiet movie night.
Saturday morning I woke up before my alarm and my bedroom was bright orange... the sunrise was hands down the most beautiful thing I've ever seen. I just sat and watched it change for about 30 minutes before the rest of the crew woke up. We made it to the mountain around 8:30 AM and got a solid day trip in. The snow in Norway was even better than the snow in the Swiss Alps. I had the biggest smile on my face the entire time, I freaking love snowboarding and I'm so glad I've been able to go since getting here!! And having Andrea's ski pass & not having to pay for a day ticket??? Even freaking better. We drove home late that afternoon (about a 3 1/2 hour drive, equivalent of Danville up to Tahoe) and had delicious sushi for dinner.
Sunday the kids and I laid around the house and they got me watching this Norwegian show called SKAM (pronounced, scum). Linda was raving about it and leave it to her to find the show with english subtitles on some sketchy online website, lol. It was actually really good though, and I'm going to keep watching it. I flew home Sunday afternoon, and made it back to Florence at 12 am. Thankfully my 9 am class on Monday morning is yoga, so I didn't have to do much pre-class prep for that.
Like I said before, I am so beyond grateful to have family in Norway, and even more thankful to have been able to go back and see it all again. I was only 10 years old the last time we went, so I was too young to appreciate the country, my family, or where I'm from. The proudest 1/4 Norwegian person there ever was :). Mormor-- you need to start speaking it around us more often please!!
Another quick flight turn around for me, I'm off to Berlin at 6 am tomorrow morning to meet up with my Dad! :) We'll be in Berlin until Friday morning, when we head back to Florence for the weekend and I'll be able to play tour guide. We have some good things planned, and I can't wait for him to see this lovely little place I have the pleasure of calling home :)
